PERSPECTIVE

MAKE A POINT

by alma eliot

A favorite ritual of ours every September is sprawling out in our pajamas with an iced coffee to flip through the latest phonebook-sized fashion magazine—you know the one. It’s a sensory experience: the feeling of the glossy, weighty cover, the scent of perfume samples wafting from the pages, the rustle and flittering of the paper. Not to mention the hundreds of colorful, pattern-filled images, testament to the invention and creativity of designers, stylists, photographers, and editors. Above all, it’s a celebration of the bizarre and the beautiful—of taking an idea and pushing it to its limits.

Many of these ideas don’t start in the mind of a New York fashion executive, though. Sometimes (in fact, often), they grow bizarrely, beautifully, organically from a specific cultural niche; they are sparked in the imaginations and souls of passionate, creative people who pique the curiosity of their peers and, in being themselves, begin a movement.

Take these incredible, super-pointy boots we spotted on VICE, which emerged from the rural Mexican town of Matehuala, San Luis Potosi, when locals began reworking boots to make them pointier. Nearby communities took to the style, and fashioned their own even pointier versions. Towns competed to have the pointiest kicks, raising and curling the tips of the shoes to new heights. And well, here we are.

Word got out: the boots found their way into Texas clubs, then music videos. Even Comme des Garcons is onboard with the trend, dressing runway models in pointy boots for a recent presentation.

Pointy boots aren’t just for show, though—they’re meant for dancing. Specifically, for dancing to tribal music, a genre that layers Pre-Columbian sounds (think ululation and chanting) with cumbia bass and house beats.

Since seeing these awesome, strange boots, we’re feeling more inclined to make our own fashion statement. After all, why not take it up a notch?

Barefoot or booted, however you dance, make it your own.
