PERSPECTIVE
80 YEARS OF “REEFER MADNESS”
Photo: Polygraph
“Genius samples genius” is how the visual essay team Polygraph describes the track “Ghetto Walkin’,” the jazz-hip-hop hybrid released by pianist and record producer Robert Glasper this year. It’s a hell of a track, backed with vocals from Bilal, a thumping beat, and Glasper’s keys. One of the coolest features we’ve seen on the web in a while, The Art of Sampling explodes the song into its component parts, beginning with a 1969 archival recording from Miles Davis.
Let it be said that it’s worth visiting the site to experience the video-driven feature yourself. Guided by Glasper’s own recollection of the song’s production, and interactive producer controls for bass, keys, guitar, and vocals, you’ll see what Polygraph means by “genius.” Since finding it, we’re listening to music in an entirely different way. Producers like Glasper are alchemists, turning slivers of musical interest into something full-bodied and magical.
