THE GREAT AMERICAN SUMMER CAMP

The idling school bus outside our window this morning made it official: the summer is over.

As August comes to a close, we’re thinking a lot about what the summer means as a period of reset and renewal, and how essential this season is to us spiritually as we head into the industry of autumn. It’s the rituals of these months that ground us, year after year: Summer Fridays, hours spent on sandy dunes, the familiar trails we conquer time and again. It’s a season simultaneously marked by stimulation and relief—the same qualities we seek in a different kind of ritual when we dip into our favorite To Whom It May delights.

Stimulation and relief were the aims, also, of another great summertime tradition: camps. Beginning in the 19th century, these colonies were sites for children to detox from the modern bustle of urban life—away from the then-popular nickelodeons, where city boys would, “slyly embrace the girls near them and offer certain indignities,” according to a 1909 report.

Guided by the belief that playing was critical to learning, the earliest camps allowed kids to reckon with untamed nature: rather than belly-flopping onto a “blob,” campers took death-defying leaps from rocky shorelines. Craft traditions promoted self-sufficiency and character development, and recreated the spirit of a romantic American frontier. With songs, pranks, and a familiar community each year, camps have their own collections of rituals.

The rise of grown-up summer camps suggests that these homes-away-from-home remain important in the adult imagination. Perhaps because they are places to truly unplug, to connect with a community and with oneself, and commune with nature. To learn and develop through play. To indulge and relax, so that we may continue to live in a state of pursuit.
